What an amazing game tonight. Dempster achieved his career high win count with 16 after failing to reach the mark in his last few starts. Soriano comes through as does Ramirez in extremely clutch situations. Marmol duels his way to lead the Cubs into the top of the ninth holding on to the lead. And in a classic battle of speed versus power, Wood defeats Fielder in a one-on-one battle of the NL Central titans to hold off the Brewers push and win the game 5-4 in front of an extremely excited Wrigley crowd.
Fielder was unreal in this game but Wood proved to be too much in the end. I could watch the off-speed pitch Wood through to Fielder over and over again. Completely buckled Fielder and froze him into a situation where he found himself going down looking and leaving the rest of us to watching the Cubs magic number go down to four. Here is a screen grab from the broadcast I watched on MLB.TV:
This guy was prepared, huh? Couple more like this and we’ll be watching the celebration of another division title for the Cubs at home, in the friendly confines of Wrigley. No better place for the team to spray champagne and enjoy success…and this Thursday would be great. It’s good for me. Is it good for you? Yeah, I thought so. GO CUBS GO!!!
Indeed–that last pitch by Wood, an 80 mph breaker, was a thing of beauty. I’m glad that Lou told him to go after Fielder instead of put him on. When Wood is in the big spots, he seems to always come out on top.
